CMM January - Bear Paw

As you can see, I've been able to start Erin's Classic Meets Modern QAL which I'm going to abbrevs as CMM from now on as it's just too much to type.  It took me a little while to decide what to do for a background fabric.  I nixed white right away even though I love the way it looks as I already have a quilt going with a solid white back ground and white is not a great color in my dog-friendly house anyway.  I toyed with grey, black and pale pink but gray seemed overdone, black- too dark, and pink, well, I want to use a wide variety of colors in this quilt and I didn't think pink would blend well enough.  On a whim I ordered some Kona in Parchment; LOVE IT.  You have to see it in person, it doesn't look like parchment to me (probably because it's not the same color as the scrolls in the Harry Potter movies), but anywho. It's a nice khaki/taupe, I don't know. Sometimes it looks like iced coffee, sometimes like sand. It goes with warms, it goes with cools, I'm totally loving it. Anyway, you know I digress.

Here's my first version of January's Bear Paw block:

I thought I was really clever and original putting these colors together.  Then I glanced up at my bulletin board where I keep business cards, notes, etc., and saw this color card from Dharma:

It might be difficult to tell in the pictures, but in person, the colors in my block are a dead ringers for Azure, Bougainvillea, Sedona and Baby Blues Eyes.  Oh well, at least if I was inspired by Pantone's Spring 2014 line, it was subconsciously.

The unfinished block is 12.5" and there are going to be 12 blocks in the QAL, so I decided I'm going to have to make two each month if I want a decent size quilt.  Here is my second Bear Paw Block:

I'm really enjoying this QAL already and I'm looking forward to seeing what else Erin has in store for us.

Talk to you soon,

Francesca
